Buffalo Jump running event draws a crowd

                                              

Ulm, Mont – A total of 76 runners competed in the 7th Annual Buffalo Jump Races held this past Sunday at the First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park near the community of Ulm.  A total of four race distances including a half- marathon, a 6.2 mile race, a 2 mile event and the Piskin Gauntlet (approximately 3 miles) were offered. The University of Great Falls Track and Cross Country teams hosted the event.
 

Anthony Davalos, Great Falls, was the winner of the men’s division of the half marathon.  He completed the event in a speedy 1:47.19 for the 13.1 mile distance.  The top female finisher was Josephine Daggett of Billings.  She finished the longest distance in a time of 1:58:57.  A total of 23 individuals participated in the half-marathon this year.
 

Christa Sprout, of Fort Benton, was the first woman across the finish line in the 6.2 mile race.  She finished the challenging course in 57 minutes and 48 seconds.  The top male finisher was Gary Bjelland, of Great Falls.  He finished with a time of 46:38 leading thirty-three finishers.
 

In the 2 mile race Chase Leveque led the male finishers (20:40), while Kaytlynn and Gen McClure, both from Great Falls tied for the women’s title (31:39).
 

On the tough trail race called the Piskin Gauntlet, a race approximately 3 miles in length, Steven Johnson of Great Falls led all finishers in a quick 17:35.  Catrina Clarke, also of Great Falls, was just as impressive with a fast time of 22:24 to lead the women’s division.
 

“The weather was absolutely fantastic”, commented race director Bill Brist.  “The runners did a nice job with very hilly courses.  I was impressed with the hearty attitude of all of the racers.  They all handled the challenging events very well.  I’m happy to have had the opportunity to be involved with helping to put on an event for such an enthusiastic group of runners and walkers.”
 

The Buffalo Jump races have been part of the Ulm landscape for the past seven years organized by the Cross Country and Track and Field Teams from the University of Great Falls since its beginning.  “The courses are challenging, but the scenery is fantastic.  The races offer an old school appeal to those looking for a chance to see what they can do against the courses, distance and the race clock.” added Brist.
